From dark to light

Artist and GNG member, Phillip Hua, designed the Steps to Wisdom as a multicolored tiled gradient that gradually transitions from charcoal gray (at the bottom) to golden yellow (in the middle) to fully mirrored (at the top) as you ascend it.

“There’s metaphors of ascension, illumination and enlightenment in the journey up the stairs. I want people to have a meditative walk like the labyrinth at Grace Cathedral or the Philosopher’s Way in McLaren Park.”

- Phillip Hua, artist

Experience it.

See our 3D rendered model of the stairs. The only element remaining is the Words of Wisdom. That’s where you come in.

Interspersed throughout the stairs will be Words of Wisdom customized tiles that have advice, reflections, and musings offered by the community.

What would your older self tell your younger self? If you could give advice to your children, friends, or even strangers, what would it be? What life lesson have you learned?

These words will be gathered and made available here on this site as a record of the collective wisdom of the neighborhood. Some will be incorporated into the tiles.

As visitors ascend the stairs, they read the tiles and self-reflect before arriving at the top of the stairs where their literal reflection awaits them through fully mirrored steps.

The stairway will not only beautify, but also evoke a meditative experience of enlightenment and growth.
